About the author

A.R. Brown

A.R. Brown lives in the High Weald of East Sussex, in the parish of Hurst Green, the village in which The Shadows of War is set.

The novel grew from the landscape close to home: the lanes, hop gardens and farms around Hurst Green and Bodiam, and the discovery that a secret resistance patrol had once been established here in preparation for invasion. That remarkable piece of local history became the starting point for a story rooted in wartime Sussex. The Afterword explores the real people and events behind it, and the historical record that inspired the novel.

A.R. Brown is also the author of the St Elowen’s books (opens in a new tab), a boarding-school series for younger readers.
