Privacy notice

Plainly put: this site collects as little as it can, uses it only for what you asked, and never sells or shares it.

Who is responsible

This site belongs to the author, A.R. Brown, who is the controller of your personal data under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR). You can get in touch about privacy through the contact form.

What is collected, and why

When you sign up

If you ask for the free chapters, or sign up for the newsletter or for news of the Second Book: Shadows of Peace, we collect your first name and email address, the page you signed up on, and, if you tick the newsletter box, the date and time you did so and the wording you agreed to. We use these to send you what you asked for.

  • The chapters. We send one email to confirm your address, then the link to your copy. The lawful basis is your request for them.
  • The newsletter. Only if you tick the box, which is never ticked for you. The lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the unsubscribe link in every email. The newsletter comes rarely.

When you use a contact form

We collect your name, email address, any organisation you give, and your message, so that the author can reply. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in answering you.

When you read the chapters on screen

The reader remembers your place, text size and page colour in your own browser’s storage. This never leaves your device, and you can clear it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data. The same applies to the country you choose on the buying page.

Who processes your details

  • Brevo (Sendinblue SAS), our mailing service, holds the mailing list and sends the emails.
  • Cloudflare hosts the site, runs the forms, protects them from automated abuse with Turnstile, and provides cookieless visitor statistics.
  • Resend delivers messages from the contact forms to the author.

Each acts only on our instructions, under a data processing agreement. Some may process data outside the UK, under safeguards approved for UK GDPR.

Cookies

This site sets no cookies of its own, and its visitor statistics are cookieless, so there is no cookie banner. Turnstile, the check on the forms, may use what it needs to tell people from automated programs, and only when you use a form.

How long details are kept

Mailing list details are kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. Contact messages are kept for as long as needed to deal with them, and no longer than two years.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your details, object to their use, or ask us to stop. Use the contact form and we will reply within a month. If you are unhappy with the answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
