The novel and the history

The Shadows of War is a work of historical fiction. The principal characters and their personal stories are fictional, although some characters bear the names of real people who lived and worked in the area during the Second World War, including the village schoolteacher and an Air Raid Precautions (ARP) warden. Their portrayal, dialogue, personalities and involvement in events have been imagined for the purposes of the novel.

The book is set against the real history of wartime Sussex. The accompanying history pages explore actual people, places and events, drawing on the sources cited. Every effort has been made to distinguish historical fact from fictional interpretation.
